Víctor Martín is an industrial engineer with more than 25 years of experience in the renewable energy sector and a strong international background. He spent a significant part of his career at EDP Renewables, where he held senior positions in various areas, including Project Manager roles in France and Belgium, CMMS analyst and developer, and tender manager for markets such as Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Romania and Germany.

At VOERAL Energies, Víctor Martín will be responsible for driving the expansion and consolidation of the BESS division, a technology set to play a crucial role in the large-scale deployment of renewable energies in the near future.

His experience, strategic vision and technical expertise further strengthen VOERAL’s positioning as a company specialized in advanced renewable energy solutions.

The importance of measuring at hub height

Modern wind turbines reach increasingly higher hub heights — 120, 140, or even over 160 meters.
Measuring wind at significantly lower heights increases uncertainty, as it requires extrapolating data using models that may introduce errors.

The closer the measurement is to the actual rotor height, the lower the uncertainty in resource assessment.

Factors that increase uncertainty

• Terrain complexity: in mountainous areas or locations with variable surface roughness, differences between low and high measurements are more pronounced.
• Vertical wind gradient: wind speed profiles change with height, especially in the lower layers of the atmosphere.
• Atmospheric conditions: phenomena such as thermal stratification or turbulence can make extrapolation from lower heights unrepresentative.

Common solutions in measurement campaigns

• Taller towers: installing guyed or self-supporting towers that reach as close as possible to the turbine’s hub height.
• Combined use of LiDAR: this technology complements tower measurements and captures vertical wind profiles up to several hundred meters.
• Scheduled maintenance: ensuring sensors and equipment operate optimally throughout the campaign to avoid adding additional uncertainty.

Impact on resource assessment

Uncertainty in wind measurement has a direct impact on project financing:

Higher uncertainty → higher risk → higher financing costs.
Reduced uncertainty → greater confidence in the resource → more profitable and competitive projects.

In summary, selecting the right measurement tower and reaching the greatest possible height is key to obtaining reliable data, reducing uncertainty, and improving the bankability of wind energy projects.

At first glance, the anemometer appears operational, but in reality the cups lose their original geometry and the mass distribution is altered.
The behaviour of the sensor then diverges from its laboratory calibration, generating significant errors in the measurement of wind speed.

The result is data that appears valid but is physically incorrect, especially during periods of intermittent ice formation, when the recorded speed no longer represents the actual airflow.
In these conditions, partial heating does not guarantee data reliability.

Solutions to Minimize the Effects of Ice on Measurement

Ice not only interrupts campaigns: it can also distort data for hours or days without being easily detected. 

Therefore, having a strategy against freezing is essential to maintain data quality and traceability.

1. Full Sensor Heating

Some anemometers incorporate complete heating in both the shaft and the cups, preventing ice accumulation in critical areas.
However, this system is offered by only a limited number of manufacturers and its electrical consumption is high, which complicates its use in remote locations or autonomous systems.

2. Use of Sensors Less Prone to Freezing

A practical alternative is to use anemometers such as the RM Young Alpine, which—although not as precise as First Class sensors—are more resistant to ice formation.
Comparing their readings with those of a main reference sensor allows anomalies or periods affected by freezing to be detected.

3. Heated Ultrasonic Anemometers

Ultrasonic anemometers avoid moving parts, reducing freezing issues.
Still, they also require heating on their arms or probes, and consumption may be high depending on the degree of thermal protection.
The more heated components the sensor has, the more reliable the measurement—provided the power supply is correctly dimensioned.

4. Temperature and Humidity Measurement

Recording temperature and relative humidity is essential for identifying conditions conducive to ice formation.
These parameters help validate data series and distinguish freezing-related errors from real wind variations.

5. Visual Verification via Cameras

An ingenious solution is to install cameras aimed at the sensor, sending periodic images or videos.
The photographs allow visual verification of ice presence, correlation of incidents, and reinforcement of campaign quality control.

In summary, there is no single universal solution against ice, and reaching availabilities close to 100% is difficult.
However, there are measures we can take to improve data availability and verify its quality.

Within the framework of GENERA, VOERAL and TDG Ibernavitas have formalized an agreement by which VOERAL becomes the official distributor of a wide range of TDG Ibernavitas products in France, Belgium and Morocco, and also enables distribution in Spain. The agreement was signed by Luis Rubio, CEO of TDG Ibernavitas, and Lorenzo Domínguez, CEO of VOERAL.

A collaboration that goes beyond distribution

This agreement enables VOERAL to market TDG Ibernavitas’ technological solutions, including not only energy storage systems (BESS), but also photovoltaic structures, micro-inverters and advanced equipment for renewable energy networks.

Industrial capacity and employment

The agreement will help drive the development of the manufacturing plant that TDG Ibernavitas is installing in Zaragoza, with an investment of more than €120 million over the next five years.

In its first phase, the planned production capacity is 2 GWh per year in a facility of 10,000 m², scalable up to 30,000 m², with the objective of reaching 5 GWh per year by 2029.
The project foresees the creation of up to 800 direct jobs, as well as a significant number of indirect positions associated with the local value chain.
